Dominic Del Rosso

NASA

Dominic Del Rosso is currently a project engineer with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Crew and Thermal Systems Division.

Mr. Del Rosso graduated from the University at Buffalo with a BS in Aerospace Engineering in 1988. While there, he completed a diverse curriculum including course work that included systems design as well as biomechanics. Near the end of his academic tour, he worked with the Center for Special Environments Research. During this affiliation, he participated in several experiments, including the first saturation diving at the facility. Mr. Del Rosso performed duties of equipment maintenance and backup medical support as well as test employed by Ocean Systems Engineering as a project engineer. There, he specialized in robotic systems and bringing the sub sea experience base, of using divers in robot systems, to NASA.

Upon completion of several successful manned/robot tests series, and related support for NASA as a sub-contractor, he was hired by NASA in 1991. Mr. Del Rosso’s initial responsibilities for NASA included all human demonstration testing for space suited crew members as well as the management of the external maintenance for the Space Station. Taking a hands-on approach to testing and defining problems and solutions, he has acquired more than 400 pressurized hours in the U.S. space suits. Additionally, he has significant time in various pressure suits of other nations and subsystems. These hours have been in environments ranging from the laboratory, air bearing floors, reduced gravity aircraft, underwater, and thermal/vacuum chambers. Mr. Del Rio has also served as the Subsystem Manager for the U.S. space suit, currently in operation, as well as work on advanced suits. He managed the effort to design and build the tooling and support equipment for the International Space Station as well. Currently, he is on loan to the life support system group, as the lead for completing the work on the Space Station Oxygen Recharge Compressor Assembly.

He thoroughly enjoys opportunities to speak to outside groups. His appearances have ranged from guest lecturer at the International Space University to a visit with UB engineering students to field trips by groups of school children. Additional duties have included technology transfer projects like NASA’s effort leading to the design of cooling suits for children who suffer from xeroderma pigmentosum. Currently, he is working to transfer NASA technology to the fire fighting industry in area of personal protective equipment and life support.

Mr. Del Rosso is also an Assistant Fire Chief with the Seabrook Volunteer Fire Department and an intermediate Emergency Medical Technician. He also serves with the Harris County Sheriffs Department Aerial Law Enforcement Task Force as a helicopter rescue specialist and with the Texas Search and Rescue Technicians Group for swift water, high angle, underwater SAR, and general SAR duties. He’s also a CPR and Emergency Response to Terrorism instructor.

Dominic Del Rosso is also an accomplished SCUBA and service supplied diver, mountaineer (including summit of the highest active volcanoes at almost 20,000 feet), rock climber, backpacker, skier, hunter and general athletic enthusiast, including ice hockey, softball and of course skydiving.

Dominic Del Rosso currently lives outside of Houston, Texas, but considers Long Island, New York as his home.
